Malgorzata Rozenek-Majdan: we should help those who want to become parents. Next week, the first reading of the citizen's bill on in vitro

As MP Monika Wielichowska of Civic Platform points out, the problem of infertility affects 15-20 percent of couples in Poland, which means that almost 3 million people of procreative age are struggling with it. In vitro is a chance for them to become parents.
- What could change the unfavorable trend is state funding of the IVF method. Such funding took place in 2013-2016, and thanks to the program, more than 22,000 healthy, happy children were born. Unfortunately, the Law and Justice party abolished this program. Today it is often local governments that rise to the occasion and from their increasingly modest budgets try to subsidize this method for their residents," says Monika Wielichowska.
From mid-November to March, signatures were collected nationwide for a civic bill providing for the subsidization of the in vitro method. Half a million people signed it. At the next session of the Sejm, which is scheduled for June 15, the first reading of the bill will take place.
- We will present our perspective: the perspective of families, people who have been trying for children for a very long time and those patients who, other than through IVF, cannot become parents. We're curious to see how those who ended a brilliantly working and internationally showcased project in 2016 will react. We have the worst fertility rate since World War II, and as a country we should do everything to help those who want to become parents," says Malgorzata Rozenek-Majdan.
The president of the MRM Foundation also refers to the words of Law and Justice deputy Barbara Bartuś, who said during a parliamentary debate on the situation of women in Poland that the in vitro method is not a method of fighting infertility, but a method of human production.
- This is a scandalous statement. It is very important to involve those involved in infertility treatment in putting up a clear objection to such subjective treatment of us and our children. Our children are a subject, not an element of human production. They are someone we most look forward to," stresses Malgorzata Rozenek-Majdan.
