40th anniversary of parenteral nutrition in Poland
Published Sept. 29, 2023 11:50
Parenteral nutrition involves the delivery of all nutrients by intravenous route. For each patient - under aseptic conditions of the hospital pharmacy - there is an individually prepared mixture containing nutrients with a strictly planned composition.
Parenteral nutrition is a complex treatment intended for patients including: after extensive intestinal surgery, with post-operative complications of the gastrointestinal tract, with inflammatory bowel disease, and for patients with gastrointestinal failure in whom natural nutrition is impossible or insufficient to keep them alive. Currently in Poland, about 1,200 adult patients and about 240 children require long-term parenteral nutrition.
Forty years ago, for the first time in Poland, Professor Marek Pertkiewicz and Dr. Krystyna Majewska - with a lot of support from Professor Brun Szczygiel - used a home parenteral nutrition program, which proved successful and is still used today.
Thanks to the fact that parenteral nutrition can be carried out at home, the patient can continue working, go on vacation and fulfill all social roles. In 1983, at the Banach Street Clinical Hospital, then the Medical Academy, Professor Marek Pertkiewicz saved the lives of the first patients through the method of parenteral nutrition at home. In 2003, at the SP Clinical Hospital
Prof. W. Orlowski, CMKP Clinical Department of General Surgery has been established
and Clinical Nutrition. Professor Pertkiewicz became the head of the clinic, and together with his team he conducted comprehensive nutritional therapy for patients.
After the death of Professor Mark Pertkiewcz, Professor Jacek Sobocki became head of the Clinic.
- Nutritional treatment of a patient at home is a combination of the latest scientific knowledge and a high degree of medical art. This complex system of treatment consists of: comprehensive treatment with ideal adjustment of the composition of the nutritional mixture by the doctor, professional care of nurses and dieticians, preparation of mixtures by the pharmacist and complex logistics," emphasizes Prof. Jacek Sobocki, head of the Department of General Surgery and Clinical Nutrition at CMKP. - Our laboratory is one of the largest in the country. Every day hundreds of patients in Poland live thanks to parenteral nutrition prepared by us," adds Prof. Sobocki.
The program of the anniversary in the official part will include speeches by invited guests, ceremonial decoration of distinguished people in the field of nutritional treatment and unveiling of a plaque commemorating Professor Marek Pertkiewicz and his achievements. The gala will be followed by a discussion meeting with the participation of patients, the Ombudsman for Patients' Rights, experts and other participants, and will be an excellent opportunity to exchange experiences and define further directions for the development of nutrition treatment in Poland.
Medexpress took media patronage of the event.
