Epidemiologists have identified diabetes as one of the most dangerous diseases of civilization. More than 500 million people suffer from it worldwide, in Poland as many as 3 million. The complications caused by diabetes are dangerous and often irreversible: blindness, kidney failure, stroke, heart attack, diabetic foot - ending in amputation, etc.
- Until recently, we thought that diabetes was an ailment primarily of middle-aged people. Recent years have shown that the risk group is expanding to include younger and younger people. About 180,000 people in Poland suffer from type 1 diabetes (also called juvenile diabetes, because it manifests itself up to the age of 35, but mostly in children ). Every year about 1,600 children under 14 years of age hear the diagnosis. The data is alarming, so in the case of diabetes it is extremely important to be aware of the risk factors, especially in the younger generation. Sedentary lifestyle (phones, computers), lack of exercise and poor diet! These are the main ones! Therefore, it should be the responsibility of the adult generation to promote healthy habits and urge decision-makers to implement health-promoting policies from an early age. Also to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes," stresses Bozena Janicka.
PPOZ physicians hope that, according to the announcements of the Senate Health Committee - 2025 will be a year of widespread prevention.
- The slogan "Prevention is better than cure" applies to all diseases, including diabetes. We won't change the black statistics if we don't change our approach to our own health, regular examinations and avoidance of risk factors. These are the best methods of fighting the dangers of civilization, which complicate both physical and mental life," says Bozena Janicka.
This year's World Diabetes Day celebration is accompanied by the slogan "Diabetes and Well-Being."
- Diabetes is a very serious and very demanding disease. Especially self-discipline! Young people do not always cope with the limitations it brings with it! How can we help them so that they do not lose their mental well-being? Let's not judge, let's not stigmatize, let's support! - PPOZ doctors appeal.
