Appeal of the Supreme Medical Council: Aesthetic medicine only in the hands of doctors
Published Nov. 29, 2024 08:38
Faced with a growing number of cases of complications resulting from aesthetic medicine procedures performed by people without medical training, the Supreme Medical Council has issued an appeal to Minister Izabela Leszczyna. The document stresses that the lack of adequate legal regulations poses a serious threat to the health and even life of patients. Every aesthetic medicine procedure involves interference with bodily integrity, which carries the risk of significant complications, which should be recognized and treated by specialists.
The Supreme Medical Council recalls that in its earlier 2021 position, it defined aesthetic medicine as health services that require interference with human tissues, which can only be performed by doctors and dentists. Based on this definition, a catalog of 29 procedures was developed, which, according to the Council's proposal, should be reserved only for those with a current license to practice medicine.
The appeal points out that adequate competence, experience and technical and organizational facilities of doctors are key to ensuring patient safety. Only medical expertise makes it possible to correctly identify potential risks, effectively prevent complications and treat them when they occur.
According to the Supreme Medical Council, regulating the performance of aesthetic medicine procedures in Poland is essential so that patients can receive high-quality services based on up-to-date medical knowledge, which will protect their health and lives from irresponsible actions of people without the appropriate qualifications.
The Council calls for legislative action to eliminate current threats and guarantee the highest level of safety and quality in this rapidly developing field.
