A tragic incident occurred during a medical intervention in Siedlce - the death of a paramedic. He was stabbed by a patient he was trying to save. The tragic event sparked a discussion about how to protect rescuers, how to equip and train them. A unique class is being offered to its students by the Silesian Medical University.

- The work of paramedics involves providing medical assistance in often difficult and dangerous conditions. Studying medical rescue at the Silesian Medical University not only teaches medical skills, but also prepares students in this field to deal with potential threats from patients, witnesses or bystanders," says Professor Alicja Grzanka, dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Zabrze, and adds: - The program includes self-defense techniques and cooperation with other services (e.g., police and firefighters) during specialized fitness classes and simulated emergency situations.

The innovative classes were introduced by the Head of the Department of Medical Psychology and Medical Humanization of the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Zabrze, Dr. Izabela Jaworska, who initiated that the training module for future paramedics should include elements of psychological self-defense.

- Our students learn the skills to recognize the possible causes of aggression and the first signs of aggressive behavior, which allows them to spot it early and de-escalate it effectively," explains Dr. Izabela Jaworska.

The psychological tools that, in crisis situations, students will use in their later work are designed not only to deal with the aggression of others, but also to support the development of the skills necessary for effective stress management and conflict resolution.

- They give the skills to conduct proper communication, as well as to manage one's own emotions in high-stress situations, Dr. Jaworska adds.
