Although there are various medications and dietary supplements containing potassium iodide available on the market, the therapeutic effect in the case of radioactive contamination is provided only by preparations in an appropriate, high dose. Both in the form of tablets and in the form of an aqueous solution, i.e. Lugol's Liquid, they are issued only by prescription. Nevertheless, their availability in pharmacies has dropped significantly. According to the data from the portal Where after Lek, potassium iodide in tablets at a dose of 65 mg is available in 41 percent. pharmacies in Poland. Iodine water solution, Lugol's solution, we will get 34 percent. pharmacies. Over-the-counter drugs have a few hundred times lower doses of potassium iodide, so taking them in case of a radioactive hazard would not have any medical justification.
Meanwhile, the position of scientific societies on the use of iodine preparations is unambiguous. Prophylactic intake of preparations containing iodine (including Lugol's solution) in doses that block the iodine uptake of the thyroid gland is not recommended, as it may cause adverse health effects for the body. This carries the risk of developing symptoms of autoimmune diseases of the thyroid gland, which can, for example, worsen symptoms of heart failure. Preparations such as Lugol's solution may additionally cause disorders of the digestive system and irritate the mucous membranes of the nose and throat. People allergic to iodine may also develop symptoms such as fever, as well as dermatological symptoms: rash, itching or iodine acne. In addition, preparations containing high doses of potassium iodide are contraindicated in pregnant and lactating women.
