As reported by the Ministry of Interior and Administration, distribution of potassium iodide tablets is a standard procedure launched in the event of a possible radiation hazard.
- In an extremely dangerous variant, the power plant could be damaged, unsealed and a radioactive cloud would form - said in an interview for Polish Radio 24, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration, Błażej Poboży.
In an interview with the Echo Dnia daily, the Świętokrzyskie Voivode, Zbigniew Koniusz, MD, PhD explained that this was a preventive action.
- This is the prevention of cancers that could appear after exposure to radioactive iodine. The counteraction is the early administration of large amounts of iodine. We remember it from the time of the Chernobyl accident, when Lugol's liquid was administered, today we secure the tablets - said the voivode.
Schools are prepared in the event of the need to administer potassium iodide to children. Parents and legal guardians are given consent forms for taking the tablets to be signed.
The Ministry of the Interior and Administration, however, reassures that there is no threat so far, and the situation is monitored on an ongoing basis by the National Atomic Energy Agency. Doctors advise against taking prophylactic potassium iodide on your own.
