- If we look at the statistics, it turns out that the life expectancy of Polish men is shorter than that of other inhabitants of Europe. Poles are more likely to suffer from cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes, and they use stimulants too often - said Iwona Schymalla, president of the Żyjmy Zdrowo Foundation, organizer of the congress.
During the discussion panel, Deputy Minister of Health, Piotr Bromber, pointed out that Poles still show little interest in health prophylaxis, while the statistics are alarming.
- Men live less than women by an average of eight years. The only question is whether it still makes any impression on them. Research commissioned a few years ago by the Ministry of Health shows that a quarter of men believe that preventive measures are ineffective. A large part of them do not feel like an addressee of these actions - said the deputy head of the Ministry of Health.
As the minister added, it is worth perpetuating the belief that taking care of your own health determines not only your own sense of security, but also the sense of security among your relatives. Meanwhile, the problem appears already at the stage of talking about health.
- There is a belief that a woman is responsible for health in the family. Men have a problem with talking about their health. No disease is embarrassing, and yet there is resistance to talking about it -
Prof. Piotr Jankowski, head of the Department of Epidemiology and Health Promotion of the Medical Center of Postgraduate Education, drew attention to the need to promote health prophylaxis among men.
- There was no conference on men's health. It is worth noting that statistically women live longer. In highly civilized countries, this difference in life expectancy is significantly, because it is about two times smaller than in Poland, the professor noted and pointed out that the main reasons for this include smoking, drinking alcohol, decreasing levels of physical activity and inappropriate diet leading to obesity.
During the Men's Health Congress, among others, issues related to emotions and psyche, sexuality and addictions. There were also talks about oncological and hematological diseases, prostate cancer treatment or attitudes that lead to a balance between personal and professional life.
