The incidence of cancer is increasing in Poland

Cancer is invariably a growing health problem of Polish society, according to the latest study by the Central Statistical Office. Gastrointestinal and reproductive system cancers are the most commonly diagnosed.

"Taking into account the incidence rate per 100,000 population, the largest increases in the registration of cases in 2019 were observed in the case of genital cancers (by 3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), respiratory organs and chest cancer (by 3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) and breast cancer (by 2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) thousand inhabitants), the study reads.

If we look at the regional structure of the incidence of cancer, it turns out that the largest, regardless of the type of disease, was found in the inhabitants of the following voivodeships: Kujawsko-Pomorskie (502 cases per 100,000 population), Świętokrzyskie (496), Pomorskie (485), Dolnośląskie (483), Śląskie (474) and Opolskie (473 cases per 100,000 population). Malignant neoplasms were detected least frequently in the inhabitants of the following voivodships: Mazowieckie, Małopolskie, Podlaskie and Lubuskie – less than 380 cases per 100,000. residents.

Among people diagnosed with cancer, regardless of the type, the majority are people aged 60-69 (34% of cases). The most frequently registered disease among the youngest people (below 20 years of age) was cancer of the lymphoid tissue. In the next age group (20-39 years) malignant tumor of genital organs was dominant. Breast cancer was diagnosed most frequently in the 40-49 age group. The most common types of cancer among people aged 50–79 were genital and digestive cancers, and among people aged 80 or more – digestive and bone cancers.
