The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a safety alert regarding cases of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and lymphomas in the scar tissue around breast implants. The FDA is asking people with breast implants to report any worrying symptoms to their doctors.
As we read in the release released on September 8, the Agency knows about fewer than 20 registered cases of SCC and fewer than 30 cases of various lymphomas located in the scar tissue that forms around the implant.
While the FDA believes that SCC and lymphomas in the sac around a breast implant may be rare, it sensitizes healthcare professionals and individuals who have or are considering having breast implants to be aware that this is happening./p>
Tumors appeared in people who received various types of implants. Some patients were diagnosed even several years after the operation. Disturbing symptoms included swelling, pain, and the appearance of lumps or skin lesions. The FDA advises that there is no need to remove the implants unless these symptoms are present.
The FDA is constantly evaluating the safety of approved breast implants. Since 2011, Agrncja has been collecting and evaluating information on cases of anaplastic large cell lymphoma associated with a breast implant (BIA-ALCL). According to a report prepared by the Cancer Treatment Center in Strasbourg (ICANS) together with scientists from the Research Institute in Illkirch-Graffenstaden, at least 949 cases have been reported worldwide.
