May 5 marks the European Day against Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities and the Day of Dignity for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities. This is an opportunity to draw public attention to the problems and challenges faced by people with disabilities in their daily lives and work.

For the barriers and limitations experienced by people with disabilities and their caregivers are the result of many factors: social, systemic and cultural. However, each of us can do a lot to make the world around us a welcoming place, where everyone will have a chance for a dignified life and personal development.

Only 14% of people with disabilities in the labor market

There are about 4 million people with disabilities in Poland, but their level of employment has remained low for years. In terms of the inactivity rate of people with disabilities, Poland ranks 5th in Europe. Employment rates for people with disabilities have increased by only about 2% over the past 10 years - from 14.4% in 2010 to 16.7% in 2020[1].

Among the reasons for this are health and disability-related limitations, low competence and education, low self-esteem, unprofitable gainful employment, failure to adapt workplaces to the needs of people with disabilities, architectural or transportation barriers.

Whyare employers still reluctant to hire? The main problem remains not only the creation of new jobs, but the sustainable employment...
