The amendment to the Medical Fund Act signed by President Karol Nawrocki was, as Jakub Szulc, the wiecepresident of the National Health Fund, admits, an expected decision. - From those announcements that came from the Presidential Palace, we assumed that the law would be signed. Especially since the President had submitted a very similar, if not outright analogous bill," says Jakub Szulc, vice president of the National Health Fund.

In the course of working on the changes, two drafts were submitted in parallel - the government draft and the presidential draft. - The important things that were in both drafts were very much unified. It was a good thing that this was done," Szulc stressed, pointing to earlier discussions and agreements between the Health Ministry and the President's Office.

The amendment is primarily intended to allow increased funding for unlimited treatment of children as early as 2025. The key change relates to the settlement of real expenses previously incurred by the NHF. Until now, about PLN 840 million a year was transferred from the Medical Fund for unlimited treatment of children. Meanwhile, the actual cost of this care was many times higher. - This was an amount four times less than what we realistically spend on treating the youngest patients," Szulc stressed. Thanks to the amendment, funds already spent from the NHF budget are to be retroactively subsidized from the Medical Fund.

The second major element of the changes is the possibility of using funds from infrastructure subfunds. This is money that was supposed to be released only in future years anyway, but which, thanks to the amendment, can be managed now.

- This is the latter amount - 4 billion zlotys," the NFZ vice president points out. As he stresses, the changes do not end with a one-time financial injection.

The amendment also increases the pool of funds in the Medical Fund itself for the next few years. - I hope that this will mean a long-term increase in public funding for the health sector," concludes Jakub Szulc.
