The Polish Neurological Society has delivered sad news: Prof. Danuta Ryglewicz, MD, PhD - an outstanding specialist in neurology, a respected researcher and one of the most important figures in modern medicine in Poland - has passed away. She devoted her entire professional life to neurology, significantly contributing to the development of diagnosis and therapy of brain disorders, including strokes, epilepsy and dementia.
Professor Ryglewicz graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the Medical Academy in Warsaw. For most of her career, she was affiliated with the Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology, where she served as head of the First Neurology Clinic and - for fourteen years - as director of the entire Institute. From 2009 to 2019, she served as national consultant for neurology, and before that was provincial consultant for the Mazovia region.
Thanks to her epidemiological research, it was possible to prepare and implement the National Programs for the Prevention and Treatment of Cerebrovascular Diseases, implemented, among others, under the POLKARD initiative. She pioneered the use of innovative therapies in the treatment of multiple sclerosis and drug-resistant epilepsy. She also participated in the creation of a nationwide network of stroke units.
Professor Ryglewicz actively supported the development of young scientists - she promoted many doctorates, was active in numerous scientific societies and served on the editorial boards of renowned medical journals. Her scientific output includes more than 500 papers published at home and abroad.
She will be remembered as an extremely committed, passionate and dedicated person to patients, colleagues and students alike. For many, she will remain an unsurpassed model of a physician, mentor and human being.
On behalf of the editorial staff of Medexpress.pl and the Health Service, we extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Mrs. Professor.
