On September 11, 2025, Dr. Alicja Karney, M.D., took over as director of the Mother and Child Institute. She has been associated with the facility for many years, and had served as deputy director for clinical affairs since 2017. Her appointment came after the previous director, Tomasz Maciejewski, MD, PhD, was appointed Deputy Minister of Health.
The Mother and Child Institute is a scientific and research unit with more than 70 years of tradition. It combines clinical activities with scientific research, focusing on the treatment of complex diseases of children and adolescents - including cancer, prematurity and perinatal infections.
The Institute's main areas of activity include:
- Science and research - focused on protecting the health of women, families and children.
- Treatment - specialized care for children and adolescents combined with scientific innovation.
- Consulting - preparing expert reports and opinions for the Ministry of Health, among others.
- Education - postgraduate training, health promotion programs and publications, including the journal Developmental Age Medicine.
The institute also carries out nationwide newborn screening aimed at early detection of congenital diseases that threaten the life and development of children. This allows rapid implementation of treatment, which is crucial to the quality of life of the youngest patients.
The Institute's team is made up of high-class specialists, including national consultants in many fields of medicine. The facility also cooperates with national and international scientific institutions and health organizations.
The Institute's mission remains: "Every day we fight for the health, dignity and joy of our patients, keeping in mind what is of greatest value to us - human life."
