- These centers will have a chance to secure, first of all, oncology patients who benefit from health care in the oncology area both now and will benefit in the future. Funding will amount to an average of PLN 220 million. This is a very important day for Polish oncology, but above all for all patients," said Health Minister Katarzyna Sójka.
The original allocation for this competition was 2.5 billion, but due to the number of entities applying for funding, it was increased to PLN 4.2 billion. Nineteen of the 39 hospitals applying for the money will receive it. Thirty projects have been qualified for evaluation. The lowest value of funding is PLN 50 million, and the highest is PLN 300 million.
- As part of the competition criteria, we not only verified the number of patients and the number of drug programs being conducted, but also placed emphasis on whether the center that will be getting the money is a clinical center and trains future medical staff," stressed Deputy Health Minister Marcin Martyniak.
As recalled by Professor Piotr Czauderna, Chairman of the Health Care Council, oncological diseases are today the second most common cause of death among Poles. About 180,000 cases are recorded annually, and 100,000 people die. By 2030, the number of cases will increase by 30 percent, and this will include younger people, not just those of retirement age. According to experts' predictions, cancer will soon become the first cause of death in Polish society.
