Coronaviruses, like influenza viruses, are subject to constant mutation, which gives rise to the need to develop new vaccine variants. We are currently waiting for a new reimbursable vaccine against COVID-19 to become available in Poland, but how long will it take? We asked the Chief Sanitary Inspector, Dr. Pawel Grzesiowski, about this.

New vaccine for COVID-19 should be available in 2-3 weeks

Dr. Pawel Grzesiowski said, among other things, that:
- Vaccines for COVID-19 are usually produced post factum - a new vaccine is developed only after a new mutation of the virus emerges. This causes us to always be "a little late" in some sense - the vaccine appears during the ongoing wave of infections.
- It should be noted, however, that one of the [new] vaccines (from Pfizer), was already available in July this year, but due to the previous government's decision not to participate in the EU purchase, it is not available [free of charge] in Poland.
- A few days ago, the European Medicines Agency approved a new vaccine from Novavax. It is hoped that it will appear on the Polish market - as a free vaccine - within 2-3 weeks.
- There is a Pfizer vaccine available in Polish pharmacies that is not reimbursed.
