The Supreme Audit Institution has presented its 2026 Work Plan based on six strategic thematic areas. As highlighted by NIK President Mariusz Haladyj, the key priority that determines the directions of the Chamber's audit activities is security in the broadest sense.
In the NIK documents, security is not limited to the military dimension. It also includes the security of citizens, the resilience of public institutions, the stability of public systems and the ability of the state to function in emergencies - including the health care system.
Health protection in hazardous conditions
One of the important elements of the 2026 audit plan will be an assessment of the preparedness of the civilian health care system to operate in armed conflict and other emergency situations. The NIK intends to check whether the system is capable of ensuring continuity of services, securing medical personnel and medical infrastructure in situations of national security threats.
The inspections will also cover activities related to psychological assistance and support for uniformed officers, which has a direct bearing on the health care system and the mental health of those serving in high-risk conditions.
Cyber security of hospitals and protection of patient data
In the area of Cohesion and Infrastructure, the NIK has planned audits on the cyber security of information systems, including the protection of personal data in health care entities. The Chamber will check the resilience of health care facilities to cyber attacks and the effectiveness of the security of information systems, which are increasingly becoming targets of criminal activities.
These inspections are particularly important in the context of the increasing digitization of health care and the processing of sensitive medical data.
Quality and safety of health services
In the area of Social Affairs, inspections are planned directly on the functioning of the health care system. Among other things, the NIK will look at adverse events in medical entities and the effectiveness of measures taken to improve patient safety.
The inspections will also cover the implementation of prevention programs, including the prevention of HPV infections, as well as oncology projects and the financing of clinical trials. The goal will be to assess whether public funds are being used effectively and whether state actions are realistically translating into improvements in public health.
Health programs and patient care
Also under the NIK's magnifying glass will be the implementation of selected public programs, such as "A good meal at the hospital," which aim to improve the quality of patient care. The chamber will check whether these programs are being implemented as intended and whether they are having the intended effect.
