The Polish Cancer Society has been observing with concern the growing popularity of unconventional methods for treating cancer that lack scientific proof of efficacy and safety. The PTO strongly opposes the activities of so-called charlatans or naturopaths who offer unproven cancer therapies, exposing patients to serious consequences of loss of health and even life.

Scientific research conducted for many decades has unequivocally shown that the effectiveness of cancer treatment depends on early diagnosis, based on imaging and histopathological studies, and the implementation of appropriate oncological treatment in accordance with current medical standards. Unfortunately, practitioners of unconventional methods often advise patients against undergoing conventional oncology procedures. An example of extreme irresponsibility is advising patients against taking a biopsy, which is the basis of diagnosis, and failure to do so leads to a delay in making a correct diagnosis and starting effective therapy.

Delaying or foregoing conventional cancer treatments, such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or targeted therapies, can lead to disease progression and reduced chances of a cure. The PTO stresses that there are many effective cancer treatments that can significantly improve patients' prognosis if implemented at the right stage of the disease.

The Polish Oncology Society urges patients to be wary of offers of unconventional therapies, which are often based on promises without coverage and mislead those seeking rescue. We encourage patients to seek consultations with qualified oncology specialists and to make therapeutic decisions based on sound medical knowledge.

The growing popularity of online "healers" should send a signal to those in power that solutions are needed to protect and secure cancer patients. On the other hand, any exploitation of the plight of those diagnosed with cancer should be considered deeply unethical and should be banned.

At the same time, the PTO is asking state bodies to take effective measures to limit the activities of individuals and entities offering unproven cancer treatments. For the sake of patients' health, it is necessary to intensify efforts to educate the public and promote reliable information about modern oncological treatments.

The Polish Cancer Society always upholds the welfare of patients and encourages the use of evidence-based therapies that provide the highest quality of oncology care.
