- The President has proposed holding a medical summit, which will take place on December 5 at 10 am at the Presidential Palace, Minister Rafal Leskevich said.
As conveyed, the President listened to an assessment of the system's performance and proposals for change. Underfunding and the lack of a coherent reform strategy were cited among the most serious problems.
Presidential spokesman Rafal Leskiewicz stressed that the summit, planned for early December, is expected to give a complete picture of the situation from the perspective of those working on the front lines of the health care system - doctors, nurses, paramedics and representatives of other medical professions.
The meeting is intended as a prelude to further activities. - The medical summit will be President Karol Nawrocki's first action item. The summit will probably be followed by recommendations, a roadmap to contribute - or, above all, to force - those in power to find funding to fix the situation in Polish medical care, the minister noted.
Physicians' organizations and representatives of the medical community from across Poland will be invited to the event, as well as Health Minister Jolanta Sobierańska-Grenda.
The talks also referred to the difficult financial situation of the National Health Fund. Shortfalls in the budget of the National Health Fund are expected to reach 20 billion zlotys this year. In response, the President presented a draft amendment to the Medical Fund Law.
The proposal calls for the NHF budget to be injected with more than PLN 3.5 billion from the Medical Fund. The money is to be used for the treatment of children and adolescents. The draft also envisages the creation of two new subfunds: for rare diseases in children and for safety infrastructure.
- We appeal to the Sejm, to those in power, to immediately begin work on this law prepared by the President's experts," pointed out Rafal Leskiewicz. He added that the system cannot afford to further restrict patients' access to treatment. - We cannot afford that more people are sent away from hospitals and treatment processes are not undertaken for them," he said.
He also called for the recommendations made at the December summit to be implemented as soon as possible to prevent further escalation of problems in health care.
