- The President's decision is proof that the voice of doctors in Poland is being heard. From the beginning, we have stressed that patient safety must always be more important than ad hoc political solutions. The veto shows that concerted, consistent pressure makes sense," cites a comment by the president of the Supreme Medical Council, Lukasz Jankowski, on the website of the medical association.
On Monday, August 25, Polish President Karol Nawrocki announced more laws that he had signed and vetoed. Among the blocked bills was the one on aid to Ukrainian citizens, specifically, an amendment to a law originally passed in March 2022, following a full-scale invasion by Russia.
However, the main premise of the veto is not the issues related to the rules of granting the right to practice (although the medical self-government in its position also pointed out the issue of discriminating doctors who obtained their education in Poland against those who have a diploma from outside the EU, in this case from Ukraine). Karol Nawrocki stressed that above all the issue of the rules for paying 800 plus: as he reminded, during the campaign Rafal Trzaskowski also advocated such changes that would make this benefit go only to those working in Poland. - And I do not change my opinion and I intend to carry out my commitment and recognize that 800 plus should belong only to those Ukrainians who make the effort to work in Poland. I feel the same way about health care," the president stressed. What is the issue of health care? - If we look at health care and note a certain preference for Ukrainians compared to Poles, and the fact that health care is due to Ukrainians regardless of whether or not they take a job and pay a health contribution, we are in a situation where citizens of the Polish state in their own country are treated worse than our guests from Ukraine, he added.
The president announced that he will submit his own bill on aid to Ukrainian citizens.
