There is no doubt that the demographic situation in Poland in 2020 was most influenced by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, which exacerbated the unfavorable trends observed for 7 years. As emphasized by the Central Statistical Office, the population has been decreasing since 2012, except for a slight increase - by less than 1,000. - in 2017
At the end of 2020, the population of Poland amounted to 38,265,000. It is almost 118 thousand. less than at the end of 2019 - GUS.
High mortality and a very low birth rate in 2020 contributed to a record low birth rate. 355 thousand were registered. live births, i.e. by almost 20 thousand less than in 2019. At the same time, the number of deaths increased - over 477 thousand died. people, i.e. by over 68 thousand. more compared to the previous year. In turn, the mortality rate was 12.4 ‰ (compared to 10.7 ‰ in 2019). Thus, in 2020, a natural decrease was recorded - the number of births was over 122 thousand. lower than the number of deaths. The birth rate (per 1000 population) amounted to -3.2 ‰, compared to -0.9 ‰ in 2019.
GUS data indicate that in 2020 there was a sharp increase in the number of deaths - over 477,000 died. people, which is mainly caused by the coronavirus pandemic - direct victims of COVID-19 account for approx. 60% of the recorded increase in mortality.
The forecasts of the Central Statistical Office are not optimistic, as the course of the observed demographic processes indicates that the population situation in Poland remains difficult.
