- Ranking in the area of clinical medicine is of exceptional importance for any medical school. I am very pleased that we are able to interest many young doctors in scientific activities, which is not easy these days throughout Europe. The interdisciplinary nature of our research deserves to be emphasized - this is primarily the result of cooperation between physicians and the pharmaceutical sciences, which are rapidly developing at our university. The results of the ranking show that it is worth betting on excellence and consistently implementing the scientific strategy planned several years ago. I am glad that once again UMW confirms its position at the forefront of Polish science," says Professor Piotr Ponikowski, rector of the Medical University of Wroclaw.
For the first time, Wroclaw Medical University was recognized in the Human Biological Sciences category, ranking 301-400 in the world and placing first in Poland. Only three Polish universities were ranked in this category: Jagiellonian University (401-500) and the Medical University of Bialystok (401-500). Presence in this discipline testifies to the developing research strength in the area of biological sciences at Wroclaw Medical University.
The GRAS ranking focuses on evaluating universities in specific academic disciplines, identifying those academic centers that excel in specific areas. The ranking evaluates the disciplines conducted at universities according to five criteria:
- number of scientific publications - evaluation of research activity through the number of articles published in the discipline;
- publication citations - the number of citations assessing the impact and importance of the university's scientific work;
- International research cooperation - the percentage of publications carried out in collaboration with foreign entities indicates the university's reach and global integration;
- Publications in prestigious journals - the number of articles in leading journals such as Nature and Science;
- Award-winning scientists - the number of employees recognized with prestigious awards.
The Shanghai Ranking, also known as the Shanghai List, consists of two main editions: ARWU (Academic Ranking of World Universities) and GRAS (Global Ranking of Academic Subjects). The GRAS 2024 edition includes more than 1,900 universities from 96 countries and evaluates 55 different disciplines.
