In the Department of General and Transplant Surgery at the Infant Jesus Clinical Hospital UCK WUM, on March 23, 2023, a team led by Professor Wojciech Lisik performed the first documented laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy in a liver transplant patient in Poland.

The patient suffered from autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), which eventually caused the failure of this organ, leading to the need for transplantation, which took place in September 2009 at the same Clinic. At the time of qualification for surgery, the patient was of normal weight, with a BMI of just under 22. In the following years after transplantation, there was a significant increase in the patient's weight, up to a BMI of 42. The reason for this was, among other things, the effect of immunosuppressive drugs.

Accordingly, the patient was qualified for laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Despite the difficult intraoperative conditions due to her surgical past, the operation proceeded without complications. The patient managed to implement early postoperative rehabilitation, which is standardly used in the Department of General and Transplant Surgery. The patient was discharged home the following postoperative day in very good general condition. No disorders of the previously transplanted organ were noted.

The Department of General and Transplant Surgery is a unique place where both surgical treatment of obesity and transplantation of organs such as kidneys, liver and pancreas are performed. All of these procedures take place within a single surgical team. This is why Children's Clinical Hospital UCK WUM is the best place to perform metabolic surgeries on both candidates for, and patients after, transplants.

The operation was carried out by a team from the Department of General and Transplant Surgery consisting of:

Medical staff: prof. Wojciech Lisik (operator), dr. Pawel Ziemiański (assistant), dr. Radoslaw Cylke (assistant), lek. Piotr Mieszczanski (anesthesiologist)

Nursing staff: lic. Barbara Wojciechowska (instrumentarist) , lic. Katarzyna Ryfka (instrumentarisuzka), mgr. Joanna Paciorek (anesthetist).
