A regional hospital in Třinec is using an unusual, yet cheap and effective method to treat persistent, recurrent diarrhea caused by the Clostridium difficile bacterium. It involves "transferring" the stool of a healthy person into the patient's intestine.

The infection is most common in elderly people in hospitals or nursing homes. A risk factor is antibiotic therapy, especially prolonged antibiotic therapy. In some cases, the course of the disease can be life-threatening. The goal of stool transplantation is to restore the microflora in the patient's intestine by transferring optimal microflora from a healthy donor.

Doctors argue that no probiotics from the drugstore have such a positive effect on restoring balance in the intestine as a stool transplant from a healthy person.

- This is a completely safe method that can be repeated. Stool, after dilution and homogenization, is transferred through a probe into the small intestine or through a colonoscopic method into the large intestine - this is the method we prefer in our country. The treatment is inexpensive and, above all, very effective. The effectiveness rate is 93 percent. - explains doctor Anna Czyzová, head of the Gastroenterology Center at Tøinec Hospital.

The patient himself must find a suitable stool donor. He must be a healthy person who has not taken antibiotics in the last three months. The optimal donor is a person living with the patient, with similar eating habits.
