The representatives of the European Commission and MEPs are obliged to refer to the problem presented in the petition and discuss it. They can also propose their own suggestions for solutions. - We hope that the result of the meeting will be the development of specific actions for further implementation by the European Commission - says Grzegorz Rychwalski, vice-president of the Polish Association of Pharmaceutical Industry Employers - National Medicines Manufacturers.
In the submitted petition, the National Drug Manufacturers indicated that the dependence of pharmaceutical production in the EU on the supply of key substances for the production of drugs from outside our continent, long supply chains and the loss of competence to manufacture them in Europe - threaten the safety of European patients. Today, 80% of the substances used in the production of medicines in Europe come from Asia. Meanwhile, until the mid-90s, Europe and the US provided 90 percent. substances used in the world for the production of drugs.
In the petition, the National Drug Manufacturers proposed the introduction of solutions to restore their production in the EU to the extent necessary to ensure the security of Europe. Higher labor costs and the need to meet stringent environmental protection standards in Europe make the production of pharmaceutical substances in the EU unprofitable today.
- The point is that the support system should compensate for higher production costs and enable EU producers to compete with Asian products - says Krzysztof Kopeć, president of the National Medicines Manufacturers (PZPPF).
The National Medicines Manufacturers indicated in the petition that a solution could be measures similar to those implemented to strengthen the European semiconductor ecosystem to attract investment and increase production capacity, and to test and assemble them in integrated plants and EU factories. Another direction is the establishment of a system of subsidies for the production of pharmaceutical substances, similar to direct subsidies for agricultural production.
