"The main objective of the "Active School" program is to counteract the negative trend in physical activity among Poles, especially children and young people. The impetus for change will be the provision of school sports infrastructure - playing fields, halls and rooms - along with the provision of professional coaching for local communities," reports the Ministry of Sport and Tourism.
The data on physical activity among Polish youth is alarming. According to data compiled with the assistance of the Mother and Child Institute, only slightly more than 40 percent of young people aged 11-15 participate in organized activities in team sports, and only slightly more than a quarter participate in individual sports.
The call for applications to join the "Active School" program started on April 2 and immediately attracted the attention of educational institutions from all over the country. After a week, applications to the project were sent by schools from one in three municipalities and from more than 20 percent of Polish districts.
Due to such great interest and in response to the needs expressed by schools and local governments, the Ministry of Sports and Tourism has decided to extend the deadline for submitting applications until Friday, April 19.
As part of the "Active School" project, sports activities available to all residents - not just students - will be held at schools and Eagles on weekdays and weekends. The salaries of those who conduct the classes are taken on in full by the Ministry of Sports and Tourism.
