- Training centers wishing to offer educational programs must meet a number of stringent requirements. Among other things, a key aspect is ensuring a high level of teamwork and maximizing the use of resources for intensive diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of patients, says Professor Mariusz Bidzinski, who heads the NIO's Gynecologic Oncology Clinic.
Adequate scope and intensity of work to ensure that trainees gain the full spectrum of experience is also an important criterion. In addition, the center must have a sufficient number of qualified medical personnel and provide access to educational resources, such as a library and laboratories. Another requirement is to enable a research program that promotes scientific and practical development in the specialty.
The clinic's accreditation was preceded by a visit by ESGO representatives, which took place in late November. The result of the audit, conducted by the chairman of the ESGO Working Group on Accreditation in the area of Training, Prof. René H. M. Verheijen, and Dr. Andrej Cokan, confirmed that the NIO Gynecologic Oncology Clinic provides optimal conditions for the development of knowledge and skills of participants in the training program, which in practice translates into improvements in the quality of medical care and innovations in treatment.
The positive result of the audit made the Warsaw branch of the National Cancer Institute one of only three centers in Poland to be accredited. The NIO's Gynecologic Oncology Clinic offers comprehensive treatment of cancers of the female genital organs, including ovarian, fallopian tube and peritoneal cancers. It specializes in advanced surgical procedures such as cytoreduction and HIPEC - surgery combined with intraperitoneal perfusion chemotherapy under hyperthermia.
A unique method available at the clinic is the treatment of recurrent tumors with intra- and perioperative radiotherapy, which combines surgery with precise radiotherapy during or just after surgery. This innovative technique is used in only a few centers in Poland. The clinic also offers sentinel node determination in patients with vulvar, cervical and endometrial cancers, which allows for limited surgery. In addition, modern targeted therapies, including growth factor inhibitors and PARP proteins, are used in systemic treatment. As part of day-to-day operations, specialists affiliated with the clinic also conduct clinical trials of novel therapies.
