- Movement is the most important medicine for old age. We have a problem with this medicine being widely used, because then you have to do something yourself. It's not a pill that we swallow, and there is no pharmaceutical company that produces physical activity," stressed Prof. Tomasz Kostka.
Dr. Joanna Kostka, a member of the CRF Interdisciplinary Expert Council, also spoke at the Congress about the fact that physical activity is recommended for everyone, regardless of age and health status.
- There is no age group that should not engage in physical activity. The recommendations of the World Health Organization say so. When it comes to physiotherapy, there is a very large area to develop," she pointed out.
Importantly, also chronic diseases should not be an excuse for sports inactivity. Physical fitness in most cases supports the therapeutic process.
- After medical consultation and proper regulation of these diseases, it is possible, and in some cases even necessary, to undertake physical activity. This is one of the most important elements in the treatment of certain diseases and prevention of most chronic diseases," Joanna Kostka points out.
While movement is recommended for everyone, it is also not worth overtraining. After all, the consequences of overtraining can also be severe.
This year's edition of the Congress of Sports Medicine of the European Federation of Sports Medicine Associations EFSMA was attended by more than 700 participants, including about 600 people from Poland and about 120 guests from 40 other European countries. The main topics of the Congress were physical activity for health, sports in the lives of children and young people, doping and anti-doping, sudden cardiac death in athletes, injuries, as well as digital devices in sports medicine and sports and the role of rehabilitation in sports.
