In March this year, right after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, free Polish language courses for medics who came to Poland began. The classes are a joint initiative of the Ministry of Health and the Medical Center of Postgraduate Education. As CMKP informs, 1,100 medics completed the free Polish language course, and about a hundred medics are still participating in the classes.

- More than a thousand medics, mainly doctors, dentists, but also nurses and paramedics from Ukraine, have completed a Polish language course organized by CMKP - says prof. Ryszard Gellert, director of the Medical Center of Postgraduate Education. - So far, the courses have been conducted in 129 groups. Medical professionals learn the general, specialist and medical Polish language. The level of students varies. Some people start with the basics, others want to improve their language in communication with patients and medical staff, but there are also people who want to work on writing skills necessary to keep medical records.

Courses are organized at levels A1 (for beginners) to C1 (specialist, medical language). One training course covers 45 teaching hours. Learning takes place online. In total, the classes were conducted by over 20 teachers. The courses are financed by the Ministry of Health. Participants receive free educational materials. The course ends with a test.

- We care about the practical language learning, which is why the course participants learn not only grammar, but also communication with the patient and medical staff - says Karolina Rosińska, Polish language teacher, e-learning methodology specialist in the e-Learning Department CMKP. - During the classes, we also use authentic materials from radio, television and trade press, because this is the best way to learn specialized words needed at work in a hospital and clinic.

The vast majority of people who apply for free courses are doctors, but nurses and paramedics also take part in the classes. Some of them work in Polish health care and know the basics of the language, but they want to get to know the medical language better.

In cooperation with the participants of the classes, a glossary is created, which includes selected phrases and expressions from individual fields of medicine. It will be published in the form of lexical exercises on the CMKP e-learning platform, thanks to which students will be able to practice the knowledge of specialized vocabulary and the correct spelling of medical terms.
