President of the Supreme Medical Chamber, Łukasz Jankowski, sent a letter to the presidents of District Medical Councils. He writes in it about universities that are not able to provide the appropriate standard of teaching medicine due to the lack of scientific staff and clinical bases.
"I propose to introduce an obligatory procedure resulting from Art. 11 of the Act on the Professions of Physician and Dentist (i.e. insufficient professional preparation) when considering applications for the granting of the right to practice a profession submitted by graduates of these universities ", we read in the letter.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Health, Adam Niedzielski, on Wednesday referred to critical voices in connection with the increase in the number of places for medical faculties at non-medical universities.
- To open a medical faculty one has to meet very strict and strict conditions. They are verified by a visit of an appropriate commission and it is regularly checked - said the minister.
However, this does not convince medical doctors and dentists who are concerned about the quality of education of future doctors.
- Education in fields such as medicine should be carried out by specialists of the highest class. I do not question the competences of my colleagues, but learning a subject such as medicine or dentistry requires both staff and facilities - comments Dr. Marcin Aluchna, an assistant professor at the Department of Conservative Dentistry at the Medical and Dental Faculty of the Medical University of Warsaw, in an interview with Medexpress.
As he adds, deep system solutions are needed that will prevent the increase in the number of doctors at the expense of a decrease in the quality of their knowledge.
- A medical graduate must be a person who has great knowledge and a lot of empathy. Pre-academic preparation is necessary so that such a person does not only have knowledge after graduation, but also the conviction that he has chosen the right course. Job interviews should be restored, because it is a profession of public trust and should be performed by people with appropriate predispositions - points
According to the assistant professor of the Medical University of Warsaw, the problem with the health care system is not that there are not enough graduates, but that they do not want to stay in the country. This is due to, inter alia, undervalued and a bureaucratic system.
