The U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises how to spend Halloween safely. Proper selection of costumes, body decorations and treats is key. The FDA's Committee on Consumer Product Safety and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has published a guide.

Although Halloween is not part of the tradition in Poland, more and more people, especially children, spend the eve of All Saints' Day having fun dressing up in spooky costumes. The FDA advises people to choose those with a "flame resistant" label on the tag. They are most often made of polyester or nylon. It's also worth taking care of visibility. That's why the agency advises wearing bright, reflective costumes. Makeup and headgear should not obstruct the field of vision, and the disguise itself must be of an appropriate length. This is because in one that is too long it is easy to trip over. For makeup, use cosmetics that we have previously tested for allergic reactions. Products should have the appropriate approvals to confirm that they are tested and safe cosmetics.

"Trick or treat," children say when knocking on neighbors' doors. However, it's worth knowing that you shouldn't eat candy whose packaging is damaged. You also need to remember to check for the presence of allergens, such as nuts, for example. A sweet snack can also pose a choking risk, which is something to keep in mind when treating smaller children in particular.

Although lenses that change the appearance of the eyes provide an interesting visual effect, the FDA advises against using lenses that are not purchased at an optical store. Decorative contact lenses sold in costume stores or other retail stores or online auctions are illegal and can cause health damage. They are contact lenses that have not been approved by the FDA for safety and effectiveness. Consumers should only use brand-name contact lenses from well-known manufacturers. Moreover, if someone hasn't worn them before, Halloween should not be an opportunity to test such products. Experts warn that buying any contact lenses without examination and recommendations from an ophthalmologist can cause serious eye disorders and infections, which can lead to permanent vision loss.
