The FDA has issued guidelines aimed at manufacturers and distributors of tattoo inks. The guidelines are intended to help manufacturers avoid situations in which tattoo ink can become contaminated with microorganisms and create potential health risks. The guidance also describes steps manufacturers and distributors could take to identify and remedy unsanitary manufacturing conditions.

Previously, the agency received many reports of illnesses caused by contaminated tattoo inks. An investigation by the agency found microbial contamination in the original sealed ink bottles.

Between 2003 and 2023, there were 18 recalls of batches of tattoo inks that were contaminated with various microorganisms, including those causing serious infections.

The FDA has urged consumers and health care professionals to report adverse reactions to tattoos through a special hotline.

What should cause concern?

After getting a tattoo, you may notice redness, swelling or warmth of the skin. Your tattoo artist should instruct you on how to care for the freshly tattooed area and how long you may experience some discomfort, the FDA website says.

If you notice that the area doesn't seem to be healing, or if you notice a rash - redness or lumps near the tattoo, contact your tattoo artist and your doctor, especially if you develop a fever, the agency advises.

More aggressive infections can cause high fever, chills and sweats. Treatment of such infections may require various antibiotics - possibly for several months - or even hospitalization and/or surgery. A rash can also mean that you are having an allergic reaction. And because the carcasses are persistent, the reaction can pers ist, the FDA warns.
