Adam Niedzielski: we are closing in on comprehensive care for children with SMA

The first pillar of comprehensive care for SMA patients was the introduction of screening tests, under which every newborn in Poland has a panel of genetic tests performed, thanks to which the disease can be detected already at the pre-symptomatic stage. More than half a million children have already undergone such tests. The second pillar is access to modern treatment. As the Health Minister pointed out, Poland is at the forefront of countries in caring for SMA patients. As of 2019, nusinersen therapy is available, and last year treatment with the world's most expensive drug, zolgensma, was introduced. Sixteen children have so far benefited from the therapy.
At the Center for Technology-Assisted Rehabilitation at the W. Degi Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Clinical Hospital in Poznań, the Minister of Health today announced the launch of Poland's first robotically assisted rehabilitation project for people with SMA, funded by the Medical Research Agency.
