The peak of the summer wave of infections in Poland will take place around the second half of August - announces Minister of Health Adam Niedzielski. The head of the Ministry of Health announced on Thursday that from Friday, July 22, people over 60 years of age will be able to get a second booster dose.

The second booster can be taken after a minimum of 120 days from the previous vaccination. E-referrals will be issued at midnight on Friday, everyone will be able to register for the vaccination and accept it even on Friday. In addition to people aged 60-79 (people over 80 can get the fourth dose from April), the second booster will be available to children from 12 years of age with reduced immunity (adults with reduced immunity already have this option) .

Adam Niedzielski also assessed the pandemic situation. - We can all see that recently we have been dealing with an increasing number of infections and we are seeing increased bed occupancy by COVID-19 patients on the part of hospitals - he said, emphasizing at the same time that the summer wave "seems to be confirming this thesis that the ailment infections are getting smaller ”. - If we look at the last three days, basically we deal with the level of new infections of about 3,000 - today's result is 2999. This means a scale of increase from week to week by about 60%. This dynamics is so consistent with forecasts that we estimate that the peak of this summer wave may occur more or less around the second half of August. The level we expect is around 8,000-10,000. infections - he analyzed.

Niedzielski also referred to data from other countries that have already had the peak of infection. - We analyze the situation in European and not only European countries very thoroughly. I gave the example of Portugal as a country that, in fact, has already passed the summer wave and the number of infections has started to decline - he said. - Looking at all countries, we monitor the situation of twelve countries on an ongoing basis: the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Spain, Israel, Germany, Portugal, Slovakia, Austria, the USA, Great Britain and Italy. None of these countries introduced any additional restrictions or restrictions. This information is especially important in the context of countries with a turning point behind them. This means that European countries are aware of the high level of immunization, and are therefore undertaking a policy of fighting the pandemic, the main essence of which is to protect people particularly at risk of severe COVID-19. I am talking about seniors 60+ and a group of people who have impaired immunity - he explained. The minister did not add, however, that in the group studied by the Ministry of Health, the vast majority of countries vaccinated their seniors much better than Poland, in which 90 percent the level of immunization has largely been achieved solely by natural exposure to the virus. This, according to experts who commented on the hot spot, may weigh on a slightly (in an optimistic variant) different course of the summer wave in Poland.

What can we expect? - At the moment, the number of hospitalizations is around 1100 people. We predict that at the peak of the wave, the number of hospitalizations will reach around 3,000, but most importantly, the structure of these hospitalizations is completely different compared to previous waves, the minister said. As a rule, patients who go to hospitals are in much better condition. - We have about 20 people under respirators, which is disproportionate to the number of hospitalizations. In previous waves, roughly 10 percent of hospitalizations were people on a ventilator, he recalled.
