Among the major topics discussed by EU health ministers at the Council meeting is:
- Assessment of the status of the revision of the pharmaceutical package,
- The area of vaccinations to prevent cancer,
- Protecting children and young people from the harmful effects of traditional and novel tobacco products,
- Equal access to health care in the European Union.
Minister Leszczyna pointed to the need to develop a more efficient system that guarantees timely and equitable access to safe, effective and affordable medicines. - We have an opportunity to develop such solutions that will contribute to ensuring better availability of medicines in Europe. Patients should have equal access to medicines regardless of the country in which they live. Given the economic differences between member states for the sake of a proper balance and wide availability, the European Union should support and protect both drug industries, i.e. the innovative and generic sectors," Minister Leszczyna stressed.
In a discussion on cancer prevention and the importance of vaccinations to prevent cancer, the Health Minister pointed out the importance of all initiatives to strengthen vaccination programs against human papillomavirus (HPV) and hepatitis B, as well as initiatives with regard to countering misinformation about vaccination. - We recognize the importance of vaccinations that can prevent cancer. We are conducting a universal HPV vaccination program. As of September 1 this year, we are expanding the age group and vaccination will include girls and boys who are 9 years old or older. We will also intensify the information and education campaign on HPV vaccination and its benefits," Minister Leszczyna concluded.
EU health ministers will also adopt Council conclusions on the future of the European Health Union.
