A record number of transplant procedures were carried out at the University Clinical Center of the University of Warsaw last year. A total of 446 organs were transplanted ( including 310 livers, 94 kidneys, 33 hearts and 9 lungs). This is almost 25 percent of all transplants in Poland.

According to Poltransplant provincial coordinator and UCK WUM transplant coordinator Krzysztof Zając, last year was a record year in terms of the number of transplants performed across the country.

- This is undoubtedly a result of the education of medical personnel and the public, the National Program for the Development of Transplantation Medicine implemented by the Ministry of Health, and the creation of positions of provincial coordinators, which facilitates contact with medical personnel of hospitals, he says.

Since the beginning of September, the Department of General, Transplantation and Liver Surgery at the University Clinical Center of Warsaw Medical University has been operating the only program in Poland to transplant a liver fragment from a living donor for an adult recipient. The first such transplantation was carried out on October 9 under the direction of Professor Michał Grąta. The recipient of the right lobe of the liver was a 19-year-old man with a rare liver cancer, the donor of the liver fragment was his 29-year-old sister.

Another breakthrough procedure by Prof. Grêt's team was the world's first supportive liver transplantation in a patient after her own organ was injured in a traffic accident. By taking advantage of the regenerative capacity of the patient's own remaining liver fragment, with the temporary support of the transplanted deceased donor liver fragment, the 50-year-old patient avoided transplantation of the entire organ, left the hospital with her own healthy liver, does not require immunosuppressive treatment and did not develop significant complications. The procedure was performed on May 31.

In turn, in the Department of Heart, Chest and Transplant Surgery at the University Clinical Center of the Warsaw Medical University, headed by Prof. Mariusz Kuśmierczyk, on April 4, the first implantation of a total artifical heart (TAH, total artifical heart), of French manufacture Aeson Carmat, took place in Poland.
