"Never near the end of a pandemic," Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters at a weekly press conference. However, he explained that right now the efforts to fight the coronavirus need to be particularly intensified.
- The marathon runner does not stop when he sees the finish line. He runs harder, putting all the energy he has left into it. We see the finish line and we are in a winning position. But it is also the worst possible time to stop on the run - emphasized the CEO of the organization.
At the same time, WHO publishes six policy reports that summarize the best solutions that can be applied now. First of all, it is necessary to ensure the vaccination of risk groups, continue research on the SARS-CoV-2 pathogen, and also include effective Covid-19 drugs for use in primary care (in Poland they are now available only in hospital treatment - ed.) .
Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO's COVID-19 technical manager, emphasized that the virus continues to circulate among the public around the world. The organization believes that officially reported numbers of infections are underestimated.
"We expect waves of infection in the future," she said, adding that the more the virus is circulating, the more possibilities it has to mutate. Medicines, especially vaccines, are effective in reducing the risk of a severe course of the disease.
