New standards for diagnosis and treatment of asthma
Published March 24, 2023 14:05
The lack of standards of practice for diagnosing and performing additional tests in cases of suspected bronchial asthma within the framework of primary care - before referring the patient to a specialist - is one of the bottlenecks diagnosed in the report "Bronchial asthma - a new model for managing the disease aimed at increasing health value," developed in 2021 by Lazarski University on behalf of the Asthma Treatment Coalition.
In response to this problem, on the initiative of the Asthma Treatment Coalition, experts, physicians from the Polish Society of Allergology, as well as the Polish Society of Lung Diseases and the Polish Society of Family Medicine, in cooperation with the Polish Society of Pediatric Pneumonology, developed a comprehensive document showing the pathway for diagnosis and treatment of asthma in children under the age of 6, between 6 and 11, and in adults. STAN3T is a compendium of knowledge on diagnosis, exclusion of asthma, differential diagnosis, comorbidities, spirometric and other tests, initiation and management of treatment, management of asthma exacerbation, suspected severe asthma, immunotherapy and pharmacotherapy.
Authored by Standards for the diagnosis and treatment of asthma in children and adults are Prof. Joanna Chorostowska-Wynimko, Prof. Andrzej Emeryk, Prof. Maciej Kupczyk, Prof. Rafał Pawliczak, Prof. Piotr Kuna, Prof. Marek Kulus, Prof. Adam Barczyk, Prof. Paweł Śliwiński, Prof. Anna Bręborowicz, Prof. Zbigniew Doniec, Prof. Henryk Mazurek, Prof. Paweł Majak, Prof. Agnieszka Mastalerz-Migas.
The standards are available in the latest Polish Allergology - Polish Journal of Allergology
