Groundbreaking operation in Anin

The procedure was performed on a patient who has suffered from cardiovascular disease for many years. The woman underwent heart transplant surgery 10 years ago. Recently, she developed rhythm and conduction disturbances requiring the implantation of a pacemaker. Due to her previous surgeries and the immunosuppression used after the heart transplant, it was decided to implant an electrodeless pacemaker, which is the most modern device of its kind on the market. The woman is the first heart transplant patient in Poland to undergo this type of procedure.
The implantation method of this pacemaker itself is minimally invasive, and the lack of electrodes significantly reduces the risk of possible complications. The device is capable of pacing the right ventricle and could potentially be supplemented in the future with an atrial pacing part.
- At this point, we have completed the first stage, implanting the pacemaker into the ventricle only. Depending on how the patient feels in the future, we have the possibility to implant the atrial part. We will make a decision in the next few months," says Pawel Syska, MD, of the National Institute of Cardiology.
- A check of the pacemaker performed the day after the procedure showed its normal function. The patient is feeling well. She still awaits periodic follow-up visits, but everything is going in the right direction," adds Dr. Michal Lewandowski of the National Institute of Cardiology.
The National Institute of Cardiology is one of the most experienced centers for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias in Poland and Europe. More than 2,500 electrophysiology and electrocardiotherapy procedures are performed here annually.
