Today is World Blood Donor Day

Blood Donor Day is celebrated around the world on June 14, the anniversary of the birth of Austrian physician Karl Landsteiner - pathologist and immunologist, Nobel laureate and discoverer of the blood group system. The idea behind the event is to express gratitude to donors who selflessly give blood, to popularize honorary blood donation, and thus increase the amount of blood obtained, which - unfortunately - is often in short supply.

- Accident, complicated surgery, severe illness, difficult delivery! Even the best care and knowledge of specialists cannot save a life when blood cannot be given. Despite tremendous advances in medicine and biotechnology, no drug has been invented that can replace human blood. And without this life-giving fluid, the body is unable to function normally. Blood provides tissues with oxygen and expels carbon dioxide from the body. In addition, it distributes nutrients and hormones, discharges harmful metabolic products to the excretory organs and performs defensive functions," says Bozena Janicka.
