A kidney was transplanted at a hospital in Szczecin using a robot. This is the first such operation in the region and the third in the country

The retrieval procedure took about three hours. The kidney was retrieved by a team of urologists from the Department of Urology and Urological Oncology at PUM in Szczecin. The organ was then handed over to the surgical team of the Department of General and Transplant Surgery, where it was transplanted to the recipient in cooperation with a urologist.
- The surgical robot allows a very precise view of the anatomy of the so-called renal hilum in particular, which has a significant impact on the safety of the donor and the quality of the harvested organ. In planning the operation, a precise 3D printed model of the donor kidney was used, which significantly influenced the safety of the procedure. The operation was made possible thanks to the urology team's extensive years of experience in robotic and laparoscopic surgery, as well as close cooperation between the nephrology-transplantation-urology team," says Professor Marcin Slojewski, MD, who heads the Department of Urology and Urological Oncology.
As Prof. Dr. Marek Ostrowski, provincial consultant in transplantation and head of the Department of Surgery and Transplantation, adds, making a 3D model of the operated organ already gives the opportunity before the surgery to get a much better idea of the organ to be harvested.
- Robotic harvesting is the future - easier access to the kidney, excellent imaging. It will certainly become a standard in our hospital. This is the direction in which world medicine is moving," adds Professor Ostrowski.
Both the donor and the recipient are feeling well.
