The National Health Fund has issued another warning about cyber fraudsters impersonating the institution. The criminals are sending out fake emails claiming supposed "reimbursement" and urging recipients to provide payment card details.

As the NFZ points out, this is another installment of the well-known phishing mechanism. Fraudsters are counting on citizens' haste, inattention and trust in public institutions.

Fake messages most often have titles such as: "Reimbursement Verification" or "Payment Card Verification." The senders use e-mail addresses that only seemingly resemble official Fund correspondence. The NFZ notes that real messages from public institutions use the gov.pl domain.

In the body of the message appears information about the need to confirm the account number or payment card details to receive a refund. Attached to the message is a link or form, the completion of which is supposed to be a condition for withdrawal of funds.

The NHF reminds that it never asks patients to administer:

  • payment card number,
  • card expiration dates,
  • CVV code,
  • Electronic banking login data.

The fund warns that providing such information can result in the loss of money and the seizure of control of a bank account.

The fund appeals to carefully check the address of the sender of the message, not to open suspicious attachments and not to click on unknown links. If you enter your data on a fake site, contact your bank immediately and block your card.

The NFZ also recommends reporting the incident to the police and the CERT Poland team. Patients can also use the NFZ's 24-hour toll-free hotline at 800 190 590.

The Fund reminds that scammers regularly use various scenarios to impersonate the National Health Fund. In recent months, there have been, among other things, fake messages about medical first-aid kits or subsequent alleged medical reimbursements.
