The Department of Mechanical Support and Heart Transplantation has been opened at the National Institute of Cardiology. It will treat patients with severe forms of heart failure. Annually, there may be up to two hundred of them. The launch of the new branch is the last stage of a several-year investment, which included the creation of, among others, Center for Heart Rhythm Disorders with an electrotherapy unit.

There are nine highly specialized workstations on the ward where it is possible to carry out therapy with the use of ventilators, renal replacement therapy and appropriately selected intravenous therapy. Supervision over patients is carried out with the use of both stationary monitoring systems (cardiac monitors) and portable telemetry transmitters.

- Treatment in this ward concerns a group of patients for whom routine management, such as those associated with, for example, traditional pharmacotherapy, is insufficient. These are patients in immediate life-threatening conditions for whom heart transplantation or implantation of a system supporting its work often remains the last resort - says Prof. Łukasz Szumowski, director of the National Institute of Cardiology.

As emphasized by David Fischel, the president of the American company Stereotaxis, which provides the hospital with robotic technology that supports doctors during the ablation of the basis of cardiac arrhythmias, over 2 million inhabitants of Poland suffer from cardiac arrhythmias. Untreated arrhythmia can significantly increase the risk of stroke, heart failure and sudden cardiac arrest.

- We are glad that we can cooperate with the National Institute of Cardiology, implementing pioneering methods of treating Polish patients. We will be pleased to support the Institute's further efforts to improve patient care and technology development in everyday clinical work - says David Fischel, president of the American company Stereotaxis, who came to Poland for the opening ceremony of the Mechanical Support and Heart Transplantation Department of NIKard.

The National Institute of Cardiology is a leading unit in Poland that treats advanced heart failure, ranging from pharmacological treatment through the use of implantable long-term circulatory support devices and heart transplantation. Since 2001, NIKard has performed over 650 heart transplants. In 2022 alone, 26 such procedures were performed.
