Endometriosis is a debilitating gynecological disease, defined as the presence of endometrial cells in an abnormal or ectopic location outside the uterine cavity. The most commonly affected sites are the pelvic peritoneum, ovaries, uterosacral ligaments and rectovaginal septum. The abnormal tissue responds to hormonal stimulation, undergoes cyclic growth and exfoliation similar to properly localized endometrial tissue in the uterus. Typical symptoms of endometriosis include painful menstruation and ovulation, severe pelvic cramps, heavy bleeding, pain during sex, urination and bowel pain, bleeding and pain between periods.
