More than 57,000 cases were reported in the whole of 2021, and 71,000 the year before. In the year before the pandemic, there were 149,000 infections, and this means that we are facing a scenario in which the number of cases identified this year will almost double.
The record year was 2014, with more than 220,000 people falling ill then (148,000 by mid-June). It looks like the current season may be similar to that of nine years ago. Let's remember that the autumn peak of illnesses is still to come.
The increased number of cases of infectious diseases is largely the result of the passage of the COVID-19 pandemic. During the period of isolation there were far fewer infections, so it can be expected that now the situation will begin to return to normal. At the same time, however, epidemiologists point to a second problem, which is the reduced interest in immunizations, including mandatory ones.
- Anti-vaccine movements have made their mark. Many parents now do not want to vaccinate their children. I deplore this, because vaccines have been available for many years. They are safe preparations with no complications. We will try to reach out to parents and convince them to vaccinate their children," Deputy Health Minister Waldemar Kraska said in an interview with TVN24.
