A study that looked at coronavirus infections in more than 8,500 Danish households between December and January showed that people infected with BA.2 had around 33% greater likelihood of infecting others compared to those with BA.1.
Statistics show that the BA.1 sub-option accounts for over 98 percent. cases of infections in the world. BA.2, on the other hand, quickly became the dominant strain in Denmark.
'We conclude that Omicron BA.2 is inherently much more infectious than BA.1 and also has properties that further reduce the protective effect of vaccination against infection, the researchers said. The study, which has yet to be reviewed, was conducted by scientists at the Statens Serum Institut (SSI), University of Copenhagen. Initial analysis showed that there is no difference in the risk of hospitalization with BA.2 compared to BA.1.
Cases of BA.2 infection have also been recorded in the United States, the United Kingdom (where BA.2 is also starting to dominate), Sweden and Norway, but to a much lesser extent than in Denmark, where it accounts for around 82% of the total population. cases.
