We are very pleased to announce that the first results of the HEROES heart failure observational study conducted under the auspices of the Polish Society of Cardiology have just been published in Kardiologia Polska. The full database containing more than 900 clinical parameters in 1,422 patients with more than one year of follow-up (survival) is now available to all 150 investigators from 41 Polish centers participating in the HEROES study, says Prof. Jaroslaw Drozdz.

The HEROES study is a prospective observational project involving 1,422 patients. Its main objective is:

  • Acquisition of detailed clinical data in a representative population of patients with heart failure, both inpatients and outpatients.
  • Evaluate the implementation of the latest guidelines in clinical practice, especially quality of care indicators.
  • Analyze the reasons for non-adherence to modern therapies, thus identifying barriers to treatment and identifying areas for improvement.

A unique aspect of the study is its approach. It does not interfere with the course of treatment or diagnosis, which guarantees full reliability of the data and compliance with clinical reality. All activities are carried out in accordance with the requirements of the Bioethics Committee.

What has already been accomplished?

Thanks to the involvement of 150 researchers from 41 centers nationwide, it was possible to create a comprehensive database containing more than 900 clinical parameters with more than a year's follow-up of patients. This data is now available to researchers, who will be able to publish detailed analyses and develop recommendations to improve patient care.

Why is this important?

HEROES is more than a collection of data. It is also an impetus for improving diagnosis and treatment. The answers provided by researchers in the electronic eCRF system will help identify barriers to treatment and implement changes that will bring real benefits to patients:

  • Improving the quality of life,
  • Reducing the number of hospitalizations,
  • Reducing the risk of death.
I extend warm thanks to all the researchers for the hard work they put into completing the data, and wish them every success in publishing the results of their detailed analyses," Professor Jaroslaw Drozdz concludes.
