According to the recommendations of experts, during increased incidence of COVID-19 and influenza, people at risk are not protected against infection caused by Streptococcus Pneumoniae bacteria. The changes introduced by the Ministry of Health will definitely benefit patients.

Patients over 65 years of age will be reimbursed for the 13-valent pneumococcal vaccine (Prevenar 13). with an increased (moderate to high) risk of pneumococcal disease, i.e. with: chronic heart disease, chronic liver disease, chronic lung disease, diabetes, cochlear implant, cerebrospinal fluid leakage, congenital or acquired asplenia, sickle cell anemia and other hemoglobinopathies, chronic insufficiency kidney disease, congenital or acquired immunodeficiency, generalized neoplastic disease, HIV infection, Hodgkin's disease, iatrogenic immunosuppression, leukemia, multiple myeloma, solid organ transplantation.

Vaccination is extremely effective in preventing severe pneumonia as well as pneumococcal invasive infections. This is a one-time vaccination. The reimbursement allows you to extend the availability for a special group of 65+ patients with comorbidities - prof. dr hab. Adam Antczak, Department of General and Oncological Pulmonology at the Medical University of Łódź.

Thanks to the abovementioned After the change, Poland joined the group of 45 countries in the world (as of March 2021) that reimburse pneumococcal vaccinations for adults. Not without significance is the fact that around one million deaths in Europe each year are caused by pneumonia. The disease is very dangerous, especially for the elderly and chronically ill, and one of the most common causes of pneumonia are bacterial infections caused, among others, by by pneumococci. According to many experts, as in the case of children, the recommended form of prevention of infection with this dangerous bacterium is protective vaccinations. As a result of the above-mentioned changes, each patient at risk will be able to purchase the vaccine at a discount based on the issued prescription.
