More than PLN 700,000 worth of equipment has been added to the operating theater of the University Clinical Hospital in Opole. It's a CO2 surgical laser, which will support the work of ENT surgeons, among others, during the treatment of laryngeal tumors and sleep apnea and other ear diseases. Orthopedic drills, on the other hand, will make it possible to conduct operations simultaneously in two rooms.

- Performing surgery with a CO2 laser reduces the time of surgery and the patient's stay in the hospital. Using this laser makes bleeding during the surgery less, so the wound heals faster, the cuts are more precise, so the surgery is less traumatic," says Professor Krzysztof Morawski, head of the Department and the University's Department of Otolaryngology.
Over the course of a year, ENT surgeons at USK in Opole perform about 150 procedures, for which they will now use the new device.
A laser for PLN 550,000 was purchased with the hospital's own funds, as were orthopedic drills for more than PLN 153,000, which supplemented the operating theater equipment in the trauma and orthopedic surgery rooms.
- We are performing more and more procedures simultaneously in two operating rooms, even more than 10 in total per day. This purchase was necessary to operate on patients with pelvic injuries or multi-organ trauma, also to perform hip and knee replacement procedures or limb correction using the Ilizarov method," explains Doctors. Mariusz Ciszewski, head of the Department of Trauma and Orthopedic Surgery.
Drills, depending on the accessories used in the procedures, have different functions: with a drill, they are used to stabilize bones, and with a blade, they are used for dissection.
In 2022, the ENT Department, which has 22 beds, will treat 1,055 patients, while the Trauma and Orthopedic Surgery Department (30 beds) will treat 1,418.
