Young doctors received referrals for internships

- You are finishing an important stage of your education and beginning a new, extremely responsible professional journey. Each of you has spent years of study acquiring knowledge, honing your skills and developing your passion for medicine. What is most important is yet to come. As you begin your internships, you will have the opportunity not only to apply what you have learned in theory, but above all to develop your competencies in practice, at the bedside, in daily contact with the challenges of our profession," Professor Robert Galązkowski, acting rector of the Warsaw Medical University, said to the young doctors.

As he added, what matters in working with the sick is not only the knowledge gained, but also the approach to work. Prof. Robert Galązkowski stressed that a doctor should never lack empathy and concern for the health and life of another person.

This year, the Regional Medical Chamber in Warsaw has organized nearly 1,200 new internship positions for medical graduates. Dr. Artur Drobniak, president of the OIL, said in an interview with Medexpress that this is the most numerous group of interns in the country.

- I think even the Cracow chamber has half as many doctors in training as we do. It's certainly a logistically difficult challenge to distribute the internship places with dignity, without loss to young doctors who should enter the profession in a safe and professional manner," said Dr. Artur Drobniak.

- Trainees are no longer accepted only by Warsaw clinics. They end up in every hospital unit in the Mazovian province. This has many advantages, both for these units and for the interns. In the opinion of many of us, an internship in a smaller hospital, a county hospital, is an internship with more responsibility, but also a faster learning curve," stressed the president of the OIL in Warsaw.

A medical internship is also one of the last opportunities to verify your professional ambitions and whether this career path is the right one.

- There are very few doctors who, after their internship, decide not to practice their profession, but, for example, to move to a pharmaceutical company. On the other hand, there are many doctors who dreamed up a certain specialty during their studies, after which the reality of internship brutally verifies their intentions or it turns out that they find and feel better in another branch of medicine," added Dr. Artur Drobniak.

Among others, the internship at Wolski Hospital in Warsaw will begin with Dr. Anna Grochowska. As she admitted in a conversation with us, this is the very unit she wanted to get into.

- I have heard reviews that it is a very good city hospital where you can learn a lot from the teaching staff. I was counting on going there, and I succeeded. I am a psychologist, so being a doctor is my second career path. I hope to expand into psychiatry," she said.

- The whole internship is supposed to prepare us for the role of a doctor. There is an internal medicine, surgery or anesthesiology part. We have to translate the knowledge from studies into being a general practitioner, and only at the end of the internship will everyone get oriented," she explained.

A doctor's internship lasts 13 months, and a dentist's internship lasts 12 months. A trainee who has not completed or started postgraduate internship may complete it within 5 years from the date of obtaining the right to practice.
